Rubber Band Airplane 1,2,3
This project was very fun. It did have its hard parts too. Lets just say that me and my partner Andrew spend more money than we should have. We first bought 2 kits. The first one did not work at all. So we went to buy another one from the hobby store. We made the airplane and it worked. Then we read the instruction sheet and realized that we could not use a kit. So we were at square one again!!
We searched Google for ideas and that is where the success came. We were going to create our airplane from scratch! So now we were on the hunt for supplies. We made our first prototype of this design but it failed. The balsa wood that we got was to heavy. It would not fly. So we were back to the hobby store.

Rubber Band Airplane 4
After going to the hobby store, for what feels like a thousand times, we finally found the right wood that was light enough. Finally we had an airplane that worked! We could keep it in the air for about 10 seconds. So now the challenge of the launcher came into play. We knew that we would have a solid airplane if we could just throw it but, we knew that was against the rules. And to make things worse we broke this airplane throwing it to much.
Rubber Band Airplane 5 & Launcher
Now that we were on our 3rd plane of the new model, we knew what we were doing. So making the airplane was not hard. The Launcher was not the problem. Out first idea was to have a sling shot. But we quickly over looked it. We spend hours thinking of what we could do! We went from just having wheels, to making things with k'nex's. I felt like nothing was going to get this airplane to fly. We were getting ready to give up when the idea of the sling shot returned. This time we did try it and it worked! We were so happy. Our launcher was a cardboard box , stick, tape, and books. It was so simple. We were now ready to launch it in class.
The day came to show what we had been working at. I was so nervous. We got up there and our first two a temps went horrible. We got less the one second on both of them. I was trying to figure out why it worked at my house but not here at school. I was not really starting to panic. I then realized that I was not pulling the rubber band far enough. With this final a temp we got the result we wanted. We got 4.8 seconds. We would have gotten a longer time but our airplane flew out of bounds So the timing had to end. But once out of bounds it was still going until it ran into a wall and stopped. Who knows how long it would have gone on for. Overall I was really really happy with our results.
